Free-to-Play Phenomenon Genshin Impact Gets Its Own PS5 Console Bundle in Japan (2024)

PlayStation has a long history of bundling its consoles with blockbuster games, and it's certainly not afraid of releasing region-specific bundles that are designed to appeal directly to key markets. For example, it's partnered with EA Sports on a bunch of European packages in the past, shipping the PS4 with select FIFA titles.

It's interesting, then, that a new PS5 bundle launches today in Japan — and it includes... Genshin Impact? Yep, if you splash the cash on Sony's current-gen console, you get a voucher for some in-game items and currency. Genshin Impact is obviously a free-to-play release, which throws the whole concept of a bundle into question.

This is what you get, by the way:

1 x Genshin Impact Gift Bundle voucher
Genshin Impact Gift Bundle digital content**:
- Outfit Option Bundle
- Festive Namecard "Celebration: Lenticular Clouds"
- Primogems ×800
- Hero's Wit ×10
- Mora ×100,000

HoYoverse enthusiast and Push Square editor Sammy tells us that this bundle has actually be available in other Asian territories, like Taiwan and China, for a while now — and so we can't help but wonder how well it's done in terms of sales.

What do you make of this bundle? Would you be tempted by such a package? Try not to spend all of your in-game currencies in the comments section below.

About Robert Ramsey

Free-to-Play Phenomenon Genshin Impact Gets Its Own PS5 Console Bundle in Japan (3)

Robert (or Rob if you're lazy) has been a fan of PlayStation since the 90s, when Tekken 2 introduced him to the incredible world of video games. He still takes his fighting games seriously, but RPGs are his true passion. The Witcher, Persona, Dragon Quest, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Trails, Tales — he's played 'em all. A little too much, some might say.

If it’s popular enough to shift consoles then it could prove profitable.

Xbox Series S had a Fortnite/Rocket League bundle which sold well and they were both free.

I’m guessing there are many fans of the game who will be enticed by this. Even if all they are getting is a shiny box and some cosmetics.

The perfect bundle for all those that don't want a bundle!

Back in my day, when you paid more for a product, you typically had something to show for it.

@nomither6 Sure do, Nintendo still makes ‘em.

These specially designed items do nothing but feed the re-seller market and give the real fans FOMO.

Not much of a bundle. I'd be more impressed if it was a special edition with artwork on the panels and controller - heck, I'd probably try to import some.

I guess it's a story because any new SKU is something of a story. But it's not a big deal.

@MikeOrator I’m not sure I understand what constitutes a “real fan” in this case, but I generally agree with the first part. That’s a separate concern from what this “bundle” is, though, I think.

@MikeOrator it’s better than nothing .

@nomither6 it's not even as if Sony had to go hard to make a special edition here - just take a page out of MS' book with inspiration from the X360 and make some unique face plates for the bundle! Job done!

I always wonder why someone who doesn't already play the game would buy such a bundle. Same with those Fortnite or Apex Legends bundle

Like what does "Outfit Option Bundle" mean to someone who doesn't play the game.

And someone who already plays the game would probably not buy it either (unless they are a hardcore fan) cause those things included in the bundle are barely anything

@nomither6
They still do, but they're all cringey and childish looking.
It was fun to have a green N64 or something as a kid, but having a PS5 in a grown ups living room be plastered with double D waifu's...? Is that what the people want lol?

@awaltzforvenus

I was responding to a couple of other posters talking about real special edition consoles. I was saying how these special edition consoles only serve the resale market and price gouging and not those who want one because they like the thing the special edition is celebrating. Nothing more, nothing less.

Is the answer yes? because I choose yes! lol

I guess the real question is, how much is all that stuff worth? I don’t really care about Genshin Impact, but if Dreamlight Valley or Fortnite packed in $70 of in game currency and items that would work for me.

Should we assume someone is paying Sony to do this?

Either way, seems weird to picture just Genshin Impact and not Honkai Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero as well, 3 fer 1. Though if Sammy has be seeing them in his life overseas maybe it's just a really old box design? 🤷‍♂️

That artwork also seems very brown, more like a mosou game than the green wide open world Breath of the Wild Zelda look I think of with Genshin.

Oh well, good for Japanese gamers who want it I suppose.

Would have been nice if the artwork was on the console instead of the box.

A lot of Japanese people play Genshin on their smartphone. This could entice those players to buy a PlayStation. Makes sense

So a free to play online game in a PS5 disk bundle? Uh huh. Just like Fortnite, the 1 game people get and don't buy anything else, uh huh.

I've seen enough PS4s sold to play Fortnite I'm not surprised this exists. But they are also free and online and no PS+ subscription so doesn't Sony want more money hmm? I get audiences won't but still. Trend games, some audiences are such boring people they can't possibly make other games sell well or help the business out compared to MTX or skins or other things or us players wanting other games to happen yet we get things like this.

People that enjoy it or want a different experience then their phone sure the performance difference is there, it moves units too for the companies, but most times like with any trends people want it to be part of the group/be emotionally satisfied because they have nothing better to do. Nothing more to see/think about there. Eh got better things to do then think about that or care what average people do. Whatever trends of games, whatever of lifecycle, whatever on the playground. Sigh.

Even in school I never cared to talk games that much even then it was whatever PC games people could get on there or flash games or older console games, a lot has happened in 10 years so the Fortnite then sports like transition has been interesting to hear about then just some big deal TV show/movie.

I get the Genshin appeal (as a game, characters and well why people sink), I know it's a quality game, seems more so then some free to play are, not a thing I care for, I care about gameplay before I do anime/anime games, especially no interest in gacha at all, I play along with the waifu joke, have a favourite anime character but nothing more than that.

Books/games can be 'friends' but not in a draining and blinding way gacha and other things can be that people that enjoy them too much get into.

I get pushing it in Japan or other countries that really go for these types of games and Sony's desperation but I mean once it move on of the PS5 servers if the game is still around (I assume it will because it's very popular) yeah a worthless bundle if anyone collects them.

@CutchuSlow Seems Sony wants to be particular with their face plates which is unfortunate some good art could be part of the console but isn't.

800 primogems? They don't even give you the equivalent value of one $70 game in this bundle. lul, mihoyo.

I think they missed a massive trick here by not making custom plates with Genshin Characters.
Weebs would have payed a fortune for that
